New Frontiers in Collaboration: Get out there and connect

16 June, 2010

In the past decade, a new world of social media has begun to have a huge impact on expanding our organizational reach, lowering costs, and sharing best practices.  Everyone uses email now, but remember 15 years ago when it was brand-new and only a few innovators were using it?  Now we’re in the middle of another shift in connection and collaboration using social media that’s referred to as “Web 2.0”. Grantstation

Grantstation always has the most up-to-date resources for funding. If you are looking for grants, this is the place to go. Their database is maintained on a daily basis, unlike those of many other organizations who rely on the last form 990 filed with the IRS (information that is already well over a year out of date.) Their easy-to-use website is a fantastic tool for grantseekers, grantwriters, and anyone looking to see what funding is out there. I use it all the time for my own research. You need to join to really get into it (but you can look for sales on Tech Soup!) Great newsletter, webinars, and excellent tutorials on the grantseeking process, useful for grantseekers at any level.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy

This is the grandmother of them all, so sure of itself that its domain name is "philanthropy". But it's full of information on everything nonprofit, too, with excellent journalism and coverage. You get a lot more when you subscribe, which is worth it, but there's still plenty available on their site.

Stay Exempt: Tax basics for Exempt Organizations

Here's the secret: this very friendly site is actually put out by the IRS, although it doesn't look like it at first. It has virtual web workshops - you can choose to listen or read - with friendly cartoon characters and an easy navigation. It includes games you can play to test yourself. (Okay, I admit that I loved the games.) There are also mini online courses, including several on filling out form 990 (required for all non profits now) and on tax exempt status. Useful and well put together. It's relatively idiot proof, which is good, since most of us are idiots about taxes.

Nonprofit Quarterly

The Nonprofit Quarterly, a nonprofit management journal,  comes out quarterly if you want to pay for it, but will send you updated information daily (oh brave new world when "quarterly" means daily!) Its readership is a literate and articulate group, as are its writers. A lot of great infomation on the nonprofit world.
